Abstract

Sharia bank is one type of bank that runs an operating system based on
sharia principles. In December 2016, the number of banks in Indonesia
conducting operational activities based on sharia principles as many as 12 sharia
banks (BUS) and 22 units of sharia business (UUS). One segmentation of
customers served by sharia banks consists of customers of Micro, Small and
Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). This study aims to determine how the portion of
Islamic banks financing changed to SMEs as well as the role of sharia public
banks in the development of SMEs in Indonesia. The object of this research is 12
sharia commercial banks in Indonesia.
The result of the research shows that almost all sharia banks are
distributing financing to UMKM although with the different portion. This
difference is due to the different business strategies and the spread of risk in each
sharia bank. The average sharia financing portfolio portion to MSMEs compared
to the average total financing of sharia banks is 32.63% in 2014, 31.17% in 2015
and 30.84% in 2016. Sharia in Indonesia has a fairly good role in the
development of SMEs in Indonesia where the portion of Islamic banks financing a
distribution to MSE is greater than the Medium Enterprises. The allocation of
financing by sharia banks to MSMEs provides an opportunity to increase business
capacity to become a big business and is expected to macro will boost Indonesia's
economic growth.
